About PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai

PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai is Asia-Pacific's leading fair dedicated to photo-based and digital artworks. Established in 2014 in response to growing regional interest in collecting photography, the fair has become an annual meeting point for the art community to discover work from emerging talents to modern masters. The 2026 edition — the fair's 11th — ran 7–10 May at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, bringing together over 45 galleries and institutions from China and around the world.

Hosted by Meta Media, the fair spans conceptual and experimental practice alongside established names, with a programme of Insights talks, the SPECTRUM and Perspective sections, and a SOLO artist showcase. Running alongside the fair, a city-wide programme links around 40 Shanghai institutions into a single visual-culture network.

The Challenge — Three Tiers of Access Across Four Days

PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai does not open to everyone at once. Admission runs in tiers: an SVIP Preview on 7 May, a VIP Preview on 8 May, then public days on 9 and 10 May. Each tier grants a different level of access on a different day, and the most exclusive previews are the commercial heart of an art fair — where collectors view and acquire before the public arrives.

That structure makes entry validation, not just ticketing, the core requirement. A VIP preview badge and a public-day ticket are different entry rights, and each has to be recognised correctly at the door — while the fair protects the calm, uncrowded viewing environment that collectors and galleries expect during preview hours.

Applicability note: This applies to art fairs and ticketed events with tiered preview access across multiple days. A single-admission event opening to all visitors at once does not require preview-tier validation.
